Richard Nixon's Grab Bag of Poetry
Last semester I took a poetry class and was advised (by my professor) to make a bag for the sake of collecting items. I was told to create my bag as something unique, something that set it apart from other bags. I was to spontaneously collect items and place them in the bag, a poem was to be written about each item collected. The logic behind this process was to focus on the process behind writing. What resulted from this process was a series of sarcastic Haiku’s with mundane objects as the subject.
An empty cereal bowl.
Bowling for substance
but found damp with suggestion
of Cocoa Pebbles.
A nickel
Who coined he term change?
Was it Abraham Lincoln?
What a god damn prick.
A tripple a battery
What’s triple “A” mean?
Assholes against acronyms?
Yeah, that’s what it means.
